This weekend I had the opportunity to visit the Bank Street Book Store, a great independent book store in New York City. While I was there shopping for some series books for my fourth graders I came across The Spiderwick Chronicles by Toni DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. I purchased the first book in the series, The Field Guide, to read through and then tease my kids this coming week. One of the fourth graders in my class will no doubt want to read this book. If you are reading this book, or are interested in reading this book with us, we would love to hear your thoughts, questions, and predictions right here on the Room 313 blog.
So, I read the entire book right after I posted The Spiderwick Chronicle post. I was so fun. But one of my favorite parts was the beginning pages of the book, not the beginning pages of the story.
The two authors write a little note to the reader explaining something unusual that happened to them at a book signing. Something about a letter they received.
You will have to read to find out what it says. But this little intro, complete with a copy of the letter they received, had me hooked.
Make of mental note: The word faery (singular form) or faeries (plural form) is in reference to a word we more commonly recognize as fairy or fairies.
I am curious what you think about the beginning?

Cool! Am excited to ask if my 5th grade kids can read this, if not I will read a bit at a time to them in my little classes.

We loved it! Now we are eagerly awaiting the next book in the series to be available at the school library. I'm hoping Jared's mother will believe him soon, and that the construction workers don't do any damage to the you-know-what room. And we hope Simon gets his you-know-whats back! Too bad about the frozen you-know-whats...
